Hiking Shoes 101

Find the Right Shoe for the Right Situation

Campfire Guy here.  I was asked a question on my Facebook Page last week about hiking shoes.  It reminded me of the stress of trying to buy the right pair of shoes.  As with most of my gear, I’ve bought and returned an embarrassing amount of hiking footwear.  I truly am like Goldilocks.  They have to be near perfect.

If the shoes aren’t comfortable walking around the house, no way they are gonna work on the trail.  This week’s video focuses on three popular options, traditional hiking boots, lightweight hiking shoes and trail runners.

My Favorite Shoes

Through a lot of trail and error, I ended up with and have been very happy with the ones in the video.  Which shoe I wear will depend on the activity, weight I might be carrying, trail conditions and weather.

Before You Go Shopping

  • Avoid cotton socks.  Plan to purchase a few pairs 0f merino wool sock.  I’m a big fan of Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks .
  • The insoles of your new shoe might be a little lacking.  Give the shoes a try at home and if they need a bit more cushion, REI has a wall of insoles.  I’ve also had good luck with Dr. Scholl’s Massaging Gel Extra Support Insoles.
  • Have them fitted by an expert.  The staff at my REI in Plano is top notch at helping you get a proper fit.

Special thanks to our friend and reader Melanie Charles for the inspiration for this week’s post!

  1. How are you going to get another trail runner if they are discontinued?
Good advice on shoes wish I would have seen this earlier, as in years earlier.

    1. Nice catch! What I should have said was, “this particular model of trail runner is no longer listed on Merrell’s website”. Fortunately, it looks like Merrell still has the All Out Rush listed on their Amazon page. Thanks for watching!
